Driving in cold weather – top 5 tips!

The Polar Vortex causing the recent bout of freezing conditions in the USA is set to make its way across the Atlantic anytime now and with sub-zero temperatures and frequent snowfall forecast within the coming weeks, it appears that we may have yet another year of road closures, slow traffic and dangerous driving conditions.

Whilst these unfortunate consequences of the bad weather are, for the most part, unavoidable; car failure often is. Breakdowns and car failure get increasingly more likely as temperatures drop, so with freezing conditions on the way, don’t get caught out!

Here are our top five tips for safe driving in cold weather conditions;

  • Pack the essentials – Never travel without de-icer/an ice scraper, blankets, a torch, snacks and water and a spade. It may sound over the top, but if you ever get stuck somewhere, these are all the things you’ll wish you had. The AA sell a winter essentials vehicle kit perfect for leaving in the boot and forgetting about until you really need it.
  • Fuel Prep – Ensure you have twice the amount of fuel needed to make your journey. Top up where possible; it will save you a lot of hassle if you end up stranded or stuck in long delays miles from a petrol station.
  • Get checked – To ensure maximum vehicle reliability in cold weather, you need to get a thorough Winter Car Check. As a registered member of the Good Garage Scheme, The Mobile Garage People abide by The GGS 20 point winter checklist which includes checking your vehicle’s battery, fluids and tyres.
  • Plan your route – Where possible, plan your route and stick to main roads. They will be more likely to be cleared of snow and/or gritted.
  • Invest – It’s always worth investing in some winter tyres. They have a higher silica content than regular tyres which enables them to respond better in cold temperatures. This means better grip, traction and control.
