Surviving the winter – Free car check and tips

Winter Weather

The weather is most definitely getting colder as the weeks move on and with that comes the kind of car problems that you just don’t need.

All too often, when conditions are icy, drivers can fall foul of a flat battery, faulty windscreen wipers, low fluid levels or a blown headlight, right at the time when they could do with them the most.

And the last thing anyone wants is a broken down car on the side of the road leaving you stranded and freezing to death while you wait for recovery.

While we all dream of a sparkly white snowy Christmas, in reality, the freezing temperatures, mud and slush that gets thrown up from the roads over the winter can be more of a pain than a pleasure.

And it’s at times like this when we rely most on things like our lights, screenwash and wipers to stop the more dangerous winter driving conditions from making things difficult.

Winter car problems

So, what tends to be the car parts that go wrong in the winter months and why?

One of the biggest issues with the cold weather is a car battery failure – you know that dreaded feeling when you turn the key and the engine just won’t burst into life?  That’s because the cold weather puts added strain on a car battery. It takes more effort to get a frozen engine going and if it’s really cold, this can affect the thickness of the engine oil, so the battery has to work even harder to crank the engine.

By having a winter car check before the temperatures drop, you can forecast any potential problems. The state of your car battery and whether it’s up to the winter weather is one of the things that is looked at.

Another problem with winter driving can be your lights. In the summer, when it’s daylight pretty much most of the time while you’re awake, you might not need your lights and not realise (or forget) that a bulb has blown.

However, in the darker months, you’re not going anywhere without your lights working properly.

Another issue can be your washer fluid levels and the state of your windscreen wipers. In the winter months when the roads are much wetter and muckier, people find they need to clear their windscreens more often. Again, it’s at this time of year that you might discover, to your horror, that you have no washer fluid or the wipers just aren’t up to the job. Again, a winter car check will nip this in the bud before it becomes a real life problem.

Additionally, remember to have your screenwash filled with a product that won’t freeze, because in really cold weather, frozen screenwash is as good as none at all!!

It’s also a really good idea over the winter months to check your oil is topped up regularly – as, with the car needing to work that bit harder, the oil levels are even more likely to get low.

With sub-zero temperatures and frequent snowfall forecast again this winter, it appears that we may have yet another year of road closures, slow traffic and dangerous driving conditions to tackle. As such, it’s always a good idea to get your car checked over before the colder weather sets in.

One of the great services we can offer at The Mobile Garage People is a free winter car check at our garage, along with tips on how to best take care of it over the colder months.

Booking a quick, winter car check could be the key to preventing your car from letting you down at the worst possible time. And as members of the Good Garage Scheme, The Mobile Garage People abide by the GGS 20 point winter checklist.

We will;

  • Check/top up all under bonnet fluids – brake fluid, power steering fluid, oil, antifreeze (coolant) and transmission fluid. This ensures the running general health of your vehicle and helps to prevents engine failure and freezing.
  • Check windscreen wiper function and screen wash levels/ratio – This aids clear vision in bad conditions, averts glare and can help to prevent windscreens from icing over.
  • Check cooling system for leaks, cooling fan operation and heater output – Ensures heater function is fit for getting rid of iced/fogged windows and also prevents drivers and passengers from freezing to their seats!
  • Check battery level and lubricate terminals – Battery failure is the most common cause of engine breakdown and car failure. In cold weather, the risk of this only increases. Checking your battery function is at its maximum capacity can help to prevent it.
  • Check/report on tyres – Poor traction and grip is one of the biggest causes of accidents when driving in dangerous conditions. In snow, rain and ice, it is even more essential that your tyres are performing properly; with the correct pressure, tread and condition.

If you do happen to have the nightmare of a breakdown, then it also pays to be prepared for when you’re stuck on the side of the road during the winter. Here is a list of things that would be a good idea to carry in your car over the colder months:
